چکیده

This study proposes and tests a model that explains the mediating mechanism through which the transactive memory system (TMS) of a team impacts on team performance under varying levels of team geographic dispersion. The model proposes that the relationship between TMS and team performance is mediated by the extent of knowledge integration among team members. The model further proposes that the degree of team geographic dispersion moderates the effect of TMS and knowledge integration on team performance. Survey data from 54 project teams in a major telecommunication company were collected to test the model. The study develops a deeper understanding of the mechanism through which TMS affects team performance and highlights the need to explicitly theorize team geographic dispersion, an important characteristic of contemporary project teams, in TMS research.

Friends and Enemies Within: The Roles of Subgroups, Imbalance, and Isolates in Geographically Dispersed Teams

Research regarding geographically dispersed teams (GDTs) is increasingly common and has yielded many insights into how spatio-temporal and socio-demographic factors affect GDT functioning and performance. Largely missing, however, is research on the effects of the basic geographic configuration of GDTs. In this study, we explore the impact of GDT configuration (i.e., the relative number of team...

An Investigation into the Tools and Techniques within the Pmbok (4th Edition) That Support Transactive Memory Systems

Transactive memory is the process of using other people as external memory aids. Research indicates that transactive memory enhances several functions that improve project performance, such as knowledge transfer, knowledge integration, and knowledge coordination. The PMBOK is a leading text used to train and inform project managers. Surprisingly, a content analysis found that only 2 of 179 tool...

Understanding the Impact of Transactive Memory Systems on Project Team Performance: The Mediating Role of Knowledge Integration and Collective Mind

This study aims at exploring potential mediators between transactive memory systems (TMS) and team performance. We argue that TMS facilitates knowledge integration and the forming of collective mind, which in turn, affect team performance. Collecting data from 205 project managers in Taiwan supports our hypotheses that knowledge integration and collective mind serve as mediator between TMS and ...

Transactive Memory System Impact on Team Performance through Knowledge Quality and Perceived Knowledge Satisfaction

Knowledge management is deemed as an effective way to maintain organization competitive advantage. However, researchers and practitioners began to question function of knowledge management on performance and try to measure knowledge management performance more precisely. To better understand the relationship between knowledge management and performance, we combine transactive memory systems wit...
